The Norwalk Virus
This past week it was reported that a cruise ship sailing from San Diego suffered an outbreak of the Norwalk Virus. What is that, you may ask? First, lets clarify what it’s not. The Norwalk virus is not a cruise ship virus. But you will always hear it reported when there is an outbreak on a ship because it is required by the CDC to be reported to them and as a result, makes for a good news story.
So what is it? Here’s a definition from a medical professional. Viral gastroenteritis is an infection that causes inflammation of the stomach and small and large intestines. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Holy crap, Batman! (my apologies…I couldn’t resist.) Definitely not something you’d want to catch on your vacation.
Here’s some more facts. It is a virus that is very common in public schools, public places, hotels, resorts, etc. A few years ago, there was a restaurant in Colorado (a very popular one BTW, and one of my favorites) that suffered an outbreak that affected hundreds of people. It made local and national headlines. And in doing a search on the subject, I found all kinds of reports at major restaurants and hotels across the country.
Only the common cold is more common! True.
On cruise ships it is most commonly spread by physical contact with the affected people or surfaces and objects they may have come in contact with. It is not usually associated with food or water. It is the touching of the food by a handler’s hands that spreads the virus. The number one preventive measure you can do is the washing of your hands, often and thoroughly. It’s not a bad idea to bring hand sanitizer although the CDC recommends the combination of hot water and soap.
Statistically, your chances of having an outbreak are rather small. I will be sailing again this June. Am I worrying? No, but I will be more aware of hand washing, keeping hands from face, etc. It is also another reason to consider having travel insurance. Generally, company health benefits do not cover you outside of the country. Any medical assistance needed would be covered with the insurance. The cruise lines will often offer you a future cruise credit or onboard credits.
I will say this. It has been my experience that the cruise lines take this very seriously and go to measures far above and beyond other industries to ensure you a great vacation. Book your trip, wash your hands, and enjoy your trip.
